Great spot for seafood in Boston. The Large rolls are definitely worth the extra cost, the meat is just healing out of... the roll! The clam chowder is great and has good flavor. Be prepared to wait in line for a bit but there is plenty of outdoor seating. The price can add up quick, but you honestly get what you pay for, and it’s worth it!read more

A buddy of mine recommended going by here for a more informal lobster roll (in lieu of a nice sit down), though stating... it's literally one of the best in town regardless of atmosphere or environment. I will say it did not disappoint. The roll (hot with butter) was absolutely amazing. The prices were on par with others I saw in the area. The outside patio seating area was nice, especially on a beautiful day. Definitely go by here when in Boston!read more

Situated on the side of the road close to the waterfront. There’s a store/market where you can buy retail and food and... there’s also the summer food truck which you place the order for food. The food was okay, we ordered to regular lobster roll and lobster bisque. They definitely give you enough lobster meat on your roll, however, it definitely was missing some flavor, it was pretty bland. The “roll” is basically a slice of bread.. not sure what the large lobster roll looks like. The lobster bisque was not thick at all, super thin and not creamy, watered down and it wasn’t even served hot - basically like warm. It was a good vibe and nice lunch spot but the taste and flavor just wasn’t there. They did have a variety of other things to choose from on the menu but we went with the most popular items.read more

Lobster is fresh but has no flavor at all. Ordered two large lobster rolls, one hot one cold. Both had no seasoning,... just plain lobster with butter on a roll and lobster mixed with just Mayo on a roll. It’s easy to get tired of the flavor. Also I don’t know why it’s like $5 more for a hot roll than a cold?? It was the same size and wasn’t even seasoned. I would definitely go elsewhere for a better tasting and actually seasoned lobster roll.read more

I really liked it here. The lobster roll with mayo is the way to go. The food came out within 10 minutes. The food was... good but wasn’t worth 38 dollars for a roll but whatever. They do have a good selection of craft beers and they even have cape cod chips!read more

I’ve been coming to James Hook on and off for about 5 years. They are still my go-to lobster roll for special... occasions. Every single time I have gone, the lobster has been fresh and perfectly cooked: sweet and tender. Granted I stick to summer rolls only. The only true setback here is that there isn’t a consistency to the quality of the mayo dressing or buns. The mayo is always well portioned and doesn’t overwhelm the lobster, but can sometimes be tasteless instead of complementing the lobster.I have been served delicious brioche (?) buns or occasionally plain hot dog buns. I’m a believer in the warm, buttered, toasted roll with the cold lobster/mayo combo. I would still go here above others, but would love a little more consistency.read more

It's a decent lobster roll but as usual, for the size and taste, it's not really worth the price as a standout roll. ... They also kind of pressure a tip before payment and as you can imagine paying $5.35 tip for a guy in a food truck to wrap up a $29 lobster roll is kind of extreme considering the carnival atmosphere. Might come back if I'm walking by but definitely wouldn't go out of my way to come back and try anything else as the prices are obviously targeted towards wealthy tourists.read more

Stopped by James Hook & Co on a recommendation and wasn't disappointed. The crab roll and clam chowder were both... delicious. I ordered from the truck window and my food came out in under 10 minutes. Most of the seating seemed to be outside but the patio had a good amount of tables, a shaded tent and a pleasant atmosphere. Definitely would visit the next time I'm in town.read more

I have to be honest, I was expecting a little bit more from this place. Many friends have been here and sang their... praises for the lobster roll, so I finally ordered one.I got the large hot/butter lobster roll with a side of coleslaw. The quantity and quality of ingredients were not the problem, the issue was not enough seasoning. The slaw and the lobster lacked seasoning. I feel like the lobster wasn't seasoned at all. The bread is also not a traditional hot dog roll, and more like a sub.I definitely want to go in person and try again, but as of right now... meh.read more

It’s so disappointing watching a business attentively manage their tourist-trade social media presence while ignoring... their local customers. Instead of publicly shaming a business that has been reliable in the past, I chose to email them directly. I messaged about the rotten mussels they sold me on a Saturday afternoon. As the picture shows, two pounds were bought (though they weighed in at less) and three quarters were dead or broken. Understandably, we tossed the rest; we’d rather not get sick. I promptly emailed. I waited. Then I followed up a week later but still got zero response. My guess is going public will magically receive one. An apology at best? Or a ‘we’ll replace them.’ But how does that make-up for travel, a ruined dinner, zero response, and the fact that unlabeled, rotten mussels are being sold to customers? Short answer, it doesn’t. But luckily, the delicious mussels bought from Whole Foods for a third less sure did. And it’s where we’ll be sure to get ours next time. Sorry, James & Co., you had your chances.read more

After trying all the lobster rolls in Boston for a trip. I am glad I made it here before I left. I was initially... hesitant to come here assuming it is a tourist trap, but it's the best in Boston without a doubt. The perfect amount of everything in what should be in a lobster roll with lobster piled high. The clam chowder was good but not the best. Definitely sets the bar high for what should be expected out of a lobster roll and clam chowder. If you plan to get a roll, get the extras lobster for the few additional dollars. I'll definitely be back to try other aspects of the menu.read more

Anyone we've asked around, this place was consistently mentioned in the Top 3, so we definitely prioritized it and glad... we did. We went on a Friday afternoon, right after we did the Harvard tour and the Harvard Museum of Natural History so we were pretty excited, plus it was a sunny (but windy day!).Initially went for the truck and it was a bit confusing because I thought we could also order there but he then said to order inside and he's just a truck. Anyway, went inside and saw the live lobsters which were super cool. My husband and I both ordered the large hot lobster rolls with butter, a small cup of clam chowder and a crab cake to share plus 2 sodas. The lobster rolls alone were $38 each so yep it adds up pretty quickly. Come prepared. :)After around 10 mins of so or wait which we honestly didn't mind, we went outside to soak up all the sun and enjoy our food. The lobster rolls were good but I felt it wasn't really particularly tasty, almost lacking in flavor. However you have the hot butter and the lobster meat was pretty generous, so I'd still say it's worth it. We actually ended up really enjoying the chowder as it was delicious. The crab cake was okay, we asked for lemon and once we drizzled some on it, it was so much better.Overall, it's in pretty good location too and seems to be one of the local favorites to get your lobster and chowder fix. 🙂read more

Place was not very alluring. Staff was not very friendly to any customers. In fact, they looked like they were working... for the sake of work and not provide a service. Their price was market rate for lobster roll but $27.99 for lobster roll with mayo versus $33.99 for lobster roll with butter sounds absurd. $6 for butter!? Come on, I’m sure the place can do a better job. Also, the food was underwhelming, 1 piece of bread folded with lobster meat on it is ridiculous. Your competitor Atlantic Fish is charging $36 for lobster roll with fries which makes it more filling. Something for the shop to consider to boost customer satisfaction.read more

My wife and I were on our honeymoon in Boston and we really wanted to try a lobster roll. Problem is, if you google... “best lobster rolls in Boston”, you get a ton of sites that aren’t helpful and are meant to trap tourists like us.But as we were walking on Atlantic ave. We saw a trailer that advertised itself as a lobster place, so we figured, with a placement like this, it HAS to be good. We did a quick google, found 2.5k positive reviews, and decided to stop and get what we’ve wanted. It was incredibly fresh, the roll was perfect, and it was no nonsense… just fresh bread, fresh lobster, and melted butter… that’s it.read more
