Was really excited to eat here for lunch. However, after we placed our order for 2 beers and 2 lobsters rolls (total... was over $90) we asked for two tap waters and were informed they only have bottled water for sale by a rude cashier. Didn't know that was even legal in Boston! Shame to say I'll be telling everyone not to come here. Bathrooms were portapotties, so couldn't even fill up an empty cup or water bottle.read more

After our Freedom Trail tour we walked over to the wharf for the iconic lobster rolls! We arrived around 1245pm on a... Saturday afternoon. We stood in line for about 15-20 minutes and ordered a warm lobster roll, crab cake, Coleslaw and a Harpoon beer. I ever grabbed a souvenir shirt for $20, and a red velvet whoopie pie for dessert. I spent under $70 which was a good deal, for the delicious tasting food! It was crowded but there were a lot of people coming and going. We found a spot under the umbrellas and enjoyed our meal. There's also a food truck on property, but with limited food items. Overall a great Bostonian stop! Happy Eats ✌️read more

We go to Boston about every three years and have made James Hook & Co one of our stops. But, this last trip just last... week will make us not return. We arrived at 5:30 (sign says closes at 6:00) and were met with employees just trying to get the place closed up, not caring about our order. The cashier was short, never said thanks or any response. The whole time I was waiting, employees were packing up the display cases and looking at me like I did something wrong. Then when we sat outside, were bothered two times asking us to pick up our stuff, even though it was only about 6:00. Given that we paid over $130 for three rolls and chowder, you would think that they cared a little more about us than leaving at 6:00 on a Friday night. We will find another lobster roll place next trip.read more

James Hook & Co is an absolute gem. The seafood is incredibly fresh and flavorful. Their lobster rolls are good, though... the lobster is quite shredded. Mayo and butter options are available, with the butter option being more expensive. You can also buy whole lobsters, even live ones, which adds to the authentic experience. The open-air area is enjoyable and makes for a pleasant spot to spend time while eating. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, perfect for enjoying a delicious meal. While it can be a bit pricey, the quality and taste make it worth every penny. If you're a seafood lover, James Hook & Co is a must-visit.read more

These lobsters are expensive, but boy are they fresh and delicious. It’s $40 for a large roll, thankfully they don’t... skimp out on the meat though. Plenty of lobster in there so you’re getting the bang for the buck. Also best English clam chowder ever. I’m so used to places serving watered down chowder with barely any clams in it, but theirs is perfection👌Double stuffed scallops is a must try, I prefer this over their crab cake. So much flavorrr.Lobster Mac & Cheese wasn’t to my taste. It was way too salty.read more

On a recent trip to Boston, we stopped by an iconic seafood and fresh lobster restaurant called James Hook + Co. You... might know it 😜 because it’s won many awards for Best Lobster Roll, as well as Traveler’s Choice, among many other national awards.“Since 1925, James Hook & Co., founded by Grandfather James Hook and his sons, has been a pioneering force in the lobster industry."Restaurants that are THAT steeped in history always are on my radar, so lunch at James Hook + Co. was a must! Here are our top three suggestions on what you should order when you’re there:🐚 Double Stuffed Scallop: I’ve lived in New England for almost 14 years and in that time, have become obsessed with any sort of stuffed shellfish. This seafood stuffed scallop is BEYOND - I can’t even begin to explain to you how delicious it was. A bright balance of acid from the lemon and the sweet scallop meat, paired with the delicious seasoned crumbs on top makes it an appetizer I want to have over and over again!🌽 Shrimp & Corn Chowder: The ideal way to warm up on a New England spring day that promises to be warm but really just delivers cloudy weather and chilly temps mind day, ha! This chowder was packed with flavor!🦞 Lobster Roll: The star of the show, this lobster roll was top-notch! The sweet lobster meat was stuffed into a grilled bun, and the lobster salad itself was perfectly tossed in mayonnaise and secret signature seasonings, which elevated it to the next level. It was also served very cold, and that contrast with the bread was lovely!Five stars ⭐️ to James Hook + Co. for delivering not only outstanding food, but great service and ambiance! I can’t wait to take my family there this summer when they visit!read more

Great spot for seafood in Boston. The Large rolls are definitely worth the extra cost, the meat is just healing out of... the roll! The clam chowder is great and has good flavor. A buddy of mine recommended going by here for a more informal lobster roll (in lieu of a nice sit down), though stating... it's literally one of the best in town regardless of atmosphere or environment. The outside patio seating area was nice, especially on a beautiful day. Definitely go by here when in Boston!read more

Situated on the side of the road close to the waterfront. There’s a store/market where you can buy retail and food and... there’s also the summer food truck which you place the order for food. The food was okay, we ordered to regular lobster roll and lobster bisque. They definitely give you enough lobster meat on your roll, however, it definitely was missing some flavor, it was pretty bland. The “roll” is basically a slice of bread.. not sure what the large lobster roll looks like. The lobster bisque was not thick at all, super thin and not creamy, watered down and it wasn’t even served hot - basically like warm. It was a good vibe and nice lunch spot but the taste and flavor just wasn’t there. They did have a variety of other things to choose from on the menu but we went with the most popular items.read more

Lobster is fresh but has no flavor at all. Ordered two large lobster rolls, one hot one cold. Both had no seasoning,... just plain lobster with butter on a roll and lobster mixed with just Mayo on a roll. It’s easy to get tired of the flavor. Also I don’t know why it’s like $5 more for a hot roll than a cold?? It was the same size and wasn’t even seasoned. I would definitely go elsewhere for a better tasting and actually seasoned lobster roll.read more

I’ve been coming to James Hook on and off for about 5 years. They are still my go-to lobster roll for special... occasions. Every single time I have gone, the lobster has been fresh and perfectly cooked: sweet and tender. Granted I stick to summer rolls only. The only true setback here is that there isn’t a consistency to the quality of the mayo dressing or buns. The mayo is always well portioned and doesn’t overwhelm the lobster, but can sometimes be tasteless instead of complementing the lobster.I have been served delicious brioche (?) buns or occasionally plain hot dog buns. I’m a believer in the warm, buttered, toasted roll with the cold lobster/mayo combo. I would still go here above others, but would love a little more consistency.read more

It's a decent lobster roll but as usual, for the size and taste, it's not really worth the price as a standout roll. ... They also kind of pressure a tip before payment and as you can imagine paying $5.35 tip for a guy in a food truck to wrap up a $29 lobster roll is kind of extreme considering the carnival atmosphere. Might come back if I'm walking by but definitely wouldn't go out of my way to come back and try anything else as the prices are obviously targeted towards wealthy tourists.read more

I have to be honest, I was expecting a little bit more from this place. Many friends have been here and sang their... praises for the lobster roll, so I finally ordered one.I got the large hot/butter lobster roll with a side of coleslaw. The quantity and quality of ingredients were not the problem, the issue was not enough seasoning. The slaw and the lobster lacked seasoning. I feel like the lobster wasn't seasoned at all. The bread is also not a traditional hot dog roll, and more like a sub.I definitely want to go in person and try again, but as of right now... meh.read more

It’s so disappointing watching a business attentively manage their tourist-trade social media presence while ignoring... their local customers. Instead of publicly shaming a business that has been reliable in the past, I chose to email them directly. I messaged about the rotten mussels they sold me on a Saturday afternoon. As the picture shows, two pounds were bought (though they weighed in at less) and three quarters were dead or broken. Understandably, we tossed the rest; we’d rather not get sick. I promptly emailed. I waited. Then I followed up a week later but still got zero response. My guess is going public will magically receive one. An apology at best? Or a ‘we’ll replace them.’ But how does that make-up for travel, a ruined dinner, zero response, and the fact that unlabeled, rotten mussels are being sold to customers? Short answer, it doesn’t. But luckily, the delicious mussels bought from Whole Foods for a third less sure did. And it’s where we’ll be sure to get ours next time. Sorry, James & Co., you had your chances.read more

After trying all the lobster rolls in Boston for a trip. I am glad I made it here before I left. I was initially... hesitant to come here assuming it is a tourist trap, but it's the best in Boston without a doubt. The perfect amount of everything in what should be in a lobster roll with lobster piled high. The clam chowder was good but not the best. Anyone we've asked around, this place was consistently mentioned in the Top 3, so we definitely prioritized it and glad... we did. We went on a Friday afternoon, right after we did the Harvard tour and the Harvard Museum of Natural History so we were pretty excited, plus it was a sunny (but windy day!).Initially went for the truck and it was a bit confusing because I thought we could also order there but he then said to order inside and he's just a truck. Anyway, went inside and saw the live lobsters which were super cool. My husband and I both ordered the large hot lobster rolls with butter, a small cup of clam chowder and a crab cake to share plus 2 sodas. The lobster rolls alone were $38 each so yep it adds up pretty quickly. Come prepared. :)After around 10 mins of so or wait which we honestly didn't mind, we went outside to soak up all the sun and enjoy our food. The lobster rolls were good but I felt it wasn't really particularly tasty, almost lacking in flavor. However you have the hot butter and the lobster meat was pretty generous, so I'd still say it's worth it. We actually ended up really enjoying the chowder as it was delicious. The crab cake was okay, we asked for lemon and once we drizzled some on it, it was so much better.Overall, it's in pretty good location too and seems to be one of the local favorites to get your lobster and chowder fix. 🙂read more

Place was not very alluring. Staff was not very friendly to any customers. In fact, they looked like they were working... for the sake of work and not provide a service. Their price was market rate for lobster roll but $27.99 for lobster roll with mayo versus $33.99 for lobster roll with butter sounds absurd. $6 for butter!? Come on, I’m sure the place can do a better job. Also, the food was underwhelming, 1 piece of bread folded with lobster meat on it is ridiculous. Your competitor Atlantic Fish is charging $36 for lobster roll with fries which makes it more filling. Something for the shop to consider to boost customer satisfaction.read more
